Having accepted the friendly invite to participate in Africa’s oldest football competition, southern Africa’s Malawi and Zimbabwe will look to dethrone Tanzania as the rulers of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
The November 25 to December 4 tournament, will be broadcast live on DStv’s SuperSport and for the first time, a commentary will be provided in East and Central Africa’s largest spoken language, Swahili.
Having stumbled at the quarter-final stages last year, Malawi, who start the campaign against Kenya tomorrow, will be looking at going all the way this time around to once again rule east and central Africa.
Kenya reigned supreme on three previous occasions in 1978, 1979 and 1988. Namibia’s 11th hour withdrawal opened up the door for another Confederation of southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) region team, Zimbabwe, increasing the chances of a southern Africa team winning the 12-team tournament.
The Warriors have previously won the tournament, beating Kenya 2-0 in the 1985 edition final.
