By Brian NkiwaneZIMBABWE missed out on the World Indoor Championships that were held in Istanbul, Turkey after failing to send athletes to the event.

The championships that started on Friday end today.

The country had two participants that had qualified for the event but the two later dropped the bombshell that there were no longer going to attend due to other commitments.According to National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Joseph Mungwari, the two athletes were Gabriel Mvumvure and Ngonidzashe Makusha.

“Gabriel is committed to his school work as he is in the final year of his studies. We understood his case when he came back to us and said he was not able to attend.

“Makusha had initially indicated to us that he was ready for the event but again he is no longer interested in taking part in this event,” Mungwari said.

The athletics administrator said not much would to be lost by not taking part in this event.

“We are not going to lose much by not sending athletes to this event. It’s just an event that these people organise and there are done indoors in big rooms. These are just the same as the daily trainings that these guys do.

“We had wanted them to participate in this event so that they get exposed to different temperatures in preparation for the London Olympics.”

Mungwari said as an association they were now working hard to send at least four or six athletes to the Africa Cross Country Championships to be held in Cape Town South Africa from  March 18.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in preparing for this event. The event has been dominated by Kenyans, Ethiopians and Moroccans, but this time around we want to try our best and make a mark in South Africa.”
