Jane Doka honoured

BY SILENCE CHARUMBIRAUnited Kingdom-based gospel musician Jane Doka was last month honoured with a Zimbabwean Achievers’ Award (Zaa) for best female gospel musician.

The award came when Doka had just returned to the UK from Zimbabwe, where she had shared the stage with Pastor Charles and Olivia Charamba.

The family show that was held at the Harare Gardens was well-attended and according to the reviews, Doka was on top of the game getting the audience busy on the dance floor.

Doka has been doing well at her shows in the UK and her steady rise should have attracted the attention of adjudicators at the awards.

Speaking to Standardlife&style last week, Doka said she was humbled by the organiser’s gesture. She hailed the awards as a noble initiative.

“I think the awards are a good initiative to recognise the good work being done by the growing Zimbabwean community in the diaspora,” said Doka.

“It also keeps us in touch with our lovely nation. I am particularly humbled by the award because I never thought I was worth an award as yet.”

The Zaa are now in their second year running having started in 2011. The second event however seems to have attracted high-profile figures as they have earned the support of telecoms guru Strive Masiyiwa, who was represented at the event.

Education minister David Coltart and Betty Makoni of Girl Child Network were also represented while boxer Dereck Chisora attended the awards ceremony.

Sponsors for the event include Moneygram, who are the major financiers, Econet and African Bush Camps. Zaa also supports some charities and this year they are supporting Vimba, Ponayi, African Baobab Foundation and Girl Child Network. The event was held at Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, Central London.

Doka is a lawyer by profession and recently released her third album titled Reflections. The 10-track album was produced by Mono Mukundu and is a clear testimony of her passion for music.

Tracks on the album include Hatirase, My Portion, Tinomutenda Jesu and, Proudly African, among others.
