By Brian NkiwaneTHE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) has confirmed that preparations for the southern Region Youth Championships set to burst into life this morning are on course.

The one-day event will be held at the giant National Sports Stadium starting this morning until around 3pm in the afternoon. Speaking to Standardsport on Thursday, Naaz director of coaching and talent identification, Tendai Tagara said the Zimbabwean team was trooping into camp ahead of the event.

“We are just monitoring our team as they troop into camp but everything else is going according to plan,” Tagara said. Tagara told this publication that the number of countries that have since confirmed participation have increased from nine to 10.

“Last week we had nine countries that had confirmed participation but the number has since risen to 10. South Africa are bringing the largest contingent of 30 athletes, 10 less than the hosts who have 40 athletes, 20 boys and 20 girls.”

Other countries which are going to grace the occasion are Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Seychelles, Angola, Mauritius, Comoros, Zambia and Swaziland.
