CIO agent accused of rape

Comment & Analysis
BY OUR STAFFA central intelligence organisation operative allegedly raped a Chivhu woman and is expected to be tried later this month at the Chivhu Magistrates’ Court, it has emerged. The operative is said to have raped the woman along the Harare-Masvingo highway after offering her a lift to Chivhu town.

The complainant is in her 20s and the accused is in his 30s and works at the President’s Office. “The case took long to be set down as the prosecutor, a police officer, was trying to convince the lady to drop the charges saying something bad may befall her for dragging a person like the agent to court, but she refused,” The Standard was told.

The CIO operative allegedly raped the woman on May 8 2012 around 7pm. Allegations are that despite indicating to the woman that he was going to Chivhu town when he offered her a lift, he took the Harare direction as soon as she got into the car.

He allegedly drove for about 5km before turning into a secluded place in Chaire. “He locked all doors and raped her before taking her to the CIO offices here in Chivhu where he raped her again,” a source said. “After that, he took her to her residence and she reported the case on the following day and the reference number is 270312.The trial date has finally been set down for the 20th of this month.

A woman who answered the phone at the President’s Office in Chivhu on Thursday morning advised The Standard to call in the afternoon as the accused would be in the office then.

But she later warned against calling the office again. “We do not have anyone by that name. Call him on his mobile,” she said.“Or give me your details so he can get back to you.

Later she said: “Do you know the place you are calling? Please do not call again.”  Efforts to get a comment from Mashonaland East police spokesperson Bulisani Bhebhe were futile as his mobile phone went unanswered when The Standard followed up on his earlier promise to get the full details from Chivhu police.
