BY CLAYTON MASEKESAMUTARE — A 17-year-old domestic worker who was fired from work and offered US$5 as payment commited suicide in Murambinda last week. The tragedy, which left the entire community shocked, happened after  Tracy Ncube took an unnamed substance after her employer, Euphrasia Chingo, told her that her services were no longer required.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Sergeant Muzondiwa Clean, confirmed the incident. Clean said Ncube arrived home late and Chingo, a teacher at Murambinda Secondary School, quizzed her on why she was late.

Ncube told her that she had been at her boyfriend’s place. This did not go down well with Chingo who then dismissed her and gave her US$5 as payment. “Ncube packed her bags and informed her neighbour only identified as Bernard that she was going to charge her cellphone at another neighbour’s house, leaving behind her belongings,” said Clean.

“She then went into the bush and took an unnamed poisonous drink.” Clean said after a while, Ncube returned and informed Bernard that she had drunk poison. She was taken to Murambinda hospital, where she died on admission.

“As police, we are saying people should learn to solve issues amicably,” said Clean.  “They should not commit suicide on small matters. They should seek professional guidance when dealing with such issues.”
