Mathazia appointed for Zita role

By Silence Charumbira PROMINENT artist Eyahra Mathazia has been appointed the public relations manager for the Zimbabwe International Taekwondo Association (Zita). Mathazia, told Standardsport that her immediate task is to bring back public interest to the sport as the country gears to host the African Championships set for March 30 to April 3 next year.

“It is not going to be easy to invoke the interest back in fans, but I am happy that the team that I am working with is committed to the task,” Mathazia said. Her involvement with the sport started at the age of 12 after she was bullied at school.

“I was locked up in a closet by a school mate,” she said.

“I was a tall slender girl and I felt I had to defend myself and it worked. The sport does not encourage participants to engage in violence, but instead nurtures them to be responsible and empowers them with various survival skills.”

She said they were now intensifying training of instructors to cater for the growing size of the association.

“Although the continental championships are still far, we are going to have two big events, one in July and the other one in November so that participants will have ample time to train.

“We already have structures in place so much that we have members in Chitungwiza, Twin Rivers in Belgravia, Mabvuku, Anglican Cathedral in the central business district, Mrehwa and Westridge School.

Zita currently has just over 300 members that cut across all age groups and sparsely spread across the country. President of the association Evans Brown said they hired Mathazia to be the face of the 16-year-old association, that has gone through a lean spell.

Taekwondo is a 70% contact sport whose major role is self defence.
