By Simbarashe Manhango Theatre buffs will be in for a treat in Blantyre when a local play Sinners takes centre stage at the Mwezi Wawala International Arts and Theatre festival from August 31 to September 2 in Malawi. In an interview with the Standard-Life&Style, director of Rooftop Promotions Daves Guzha said they would stage three shows in Blantyre during the festival and also eight additional shows in Lilongwe after the festival.

“We are going to stage three shows during this festival and also have eight other performances in Lilongwe,” said Guzha.

“This is part of an initiative that has been made possible by the organisers of the festival. The whole cast will be leaving on August 29 for the tour and return on September 9.”

Sinners is a play that addresses a delicate and explicit subject matter of three ladies of the night who decide that they have had enough of prostitution and venture into more lucrative business.

They are later recruited by a businesswoman to collect used condoms from their male victims.

Comprising a star-studded cast of Eunice Tava, Charity Dlodlo and Getrude Vimbayi Munhamo, the play was written by Patrick Chasaya and directed and produced by Guzha.

Sinners had quite a good run at Theatre in the Park and due to its popularity, the stage play was turned into a feature film.

The play will tour Malawi before embarking on another planned tour in Zambia.

“This is only the beginning and I am happy that we have started our tours on a good note. We have more tours coming up and this makes it easier for us to also support our brand and expose our artists to a different stage,” said Guzha.

It has been a year since Sinners was showcased last year in June and to all those who have watched the play, it will certainly evoke an insight into the story of the alleged female rapists that gripped the country last year.

Rooftop has produced internationally acclaimed shows that have toured all over the world.

They have also done outreach programmes with plays advocating peace, healing and reconciliation, among other issues.
