I sing in the church choir that requires us to wear a uniform. So, all of us look more or less identical, save for our accessories that we rely on in our final bid to be ourselves and not look like everyone else.

Accessories come in the form of bangles, bracelets, cuffs, earrings, rings, necklaces, handbags, scarves, hairpins, hair bands, belts, shades, hats, or basically anything that you can use to add more pizzazz to your outfit to complete it.

Why accessories?

They can be a subtle way of following a trend, for instance the neon trend. A neon blouse may be too much for you, so you could do it with jewellery or your handbag.

Whether they are big and over the top or subtle, they are still a way of expressing yourself and your unique sense of style.

Tips to bear in mind when shopping for or deciding on accessories: Sunglasses — if they move when you smile, they are too big for your face. They are sitting on the apple of your cheeks. If your face is round or heart shaped, go for a square-ish frame. If your face is square-shaped roundish frames are best. If oval, any shape goes (lucky fish). Choose accessories that balance out and enhance your features.

Belts — Narrow belts are in nowadays but that depends on your frame. I am slim, therefore  a narrower belt is best. If you are curvier, a wider belt is best.

Earrings — If you wear long chandelier earrings, there is no need for a necklace because the earrings are long therefore they are adorning your ears as well as your neck. Chandelier earrings plus a necklace is an overkill. If you decide to wear an elaborate necklace, keep the earrings simple and on the ears only.

Hats — these come in different types and material, so choose one that best suits the event.

Necklaces, bangles, hats, scarves and watches

Necklaces — if you have a long torso, wearing a shorter necklace will balance out your torso. If you have a short torso, a long necklace will elongate your necklace. Wear your pearls (fake or real) during the day and wear your diamonds (fake or real) for the evening.

Bangles and cuffs — if you have a tiny wrist like mine, you probably have a hard time finding a bangle that does not fall off so cuffs are best because they are adjustable.  If you decide to wear a bangle then you can skip the dress ring. Your bangle is adorning your hand so is the ring so pick one or the other.

Handbags — Another functional accessory that can be used to complete and complement your outfit.

Scarves — are very diverse. They can be tied around handbag handles, the head or the neck. Even then, they can be tied in a variety of ways so have fun with these.

Watch — Once again, a functional accessory. If you own a sports watch you may want to consider wearing it with your casual wear whilst a more formal watch would do well with your work attire or more formal attire.

One thing to remember with accessories is that less is more. Do not wear every accessory you own and accessorise every ounce of your body all at once. Coco Chanel put it this way: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory”.
