An interim committee has already been appointed to run the affairs of the Harare Karate Association.

The nine-member committee chaired by Joshua Kumire will hold fort until elections for a substantive committee are held within six months at a special general meeting.

The sport in the metropolitan province has been without leadership for the past three years.

Interim committees are also expected to be chosen in Matabeleland, Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces before plebiscites for substantive ones.

The rest of the provinces have substantive executives. ZKU president Joel Rugwete said in a statement that the union was eager to see the smooth running of the game in all corners of the country.

Meanwhile, ZKU will today join the World Karate Federation (WKF) in launching the World Karate Day in support of the spirit of Olympism. Dubbed the “K Day” and themed Let the World Discover Karate, the event would take place in several cities around the world.

ZKU will also celebrate the day in style by staging displays in public places like parks, and bus termini around the country.

The event will become a permanent feature on the calendar of karate the world over.
