MZANSI90, a committee tasked to mobilise resources for the Warriors, meets this week to discuss the disbursement of the funds following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. REPORT BY ALBERT MARUFU
The committee raised more than US$500 000.
The Rahman Gumbo coached Warriors fell 2-0 to Angola to surrender their 3-1 first leg victory, thereby failing to qualify through an away goals’ rule.
Chairman of the committee George Manyaya said they were waiting for audit firm KPMG to complete its job before going public.
“We are going to meet either on Monday [tomorrow] or Tuesday. Once the auditing is through, we will then go public on how the funds were used. We are also paying off service providers such as Pandhari Lodge where the Warriors were staying,” Manyaya said.
Manyaya however, said that the money was not much since most of the companies were still to deposit their pledges.
“We cannot go to them [companies] asking for the money because the team lost. The committee will make public the list of companies that made pledges and the amounts they deposited into the account for accountability purposes. People should know how the money was used and if there are any left overs as well,” he said.
The Warriors had also been promised stands in the leafy suburb of Borrowdale on top of hefty winning bonuses in the event that they qualified for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
