The awards come at time when cricket standards are going down with some quarters describing the awards as honouring mediocrity.

With two more awards having been introduced this year, cricket fans have been given an opportunity to choose their best player under the People’s Choice Award through various platforms.

“The ZC annual awards night is a celebration of what is good in local cricket as it acknowledges those who have excelled in the various aspects of the game such as in play, officiating, administration and development,” said ZC spokesperson Shingai Rhuhwaya.

National team skipper Brendon Taylor will battle it out for the top accolade with Hamilton Masakadza and last year’s Rookie player Brian Vitori for the Cricketer of the Year award.

Masakadza finished third on the national Twenty20 batting table, fourth in One-Day Internationals (ODI) and fifth in Test matches, where he scored 169 runs in four matches, with his highest being 104. His the best batsman in ODIs with 700 runs in 14 matches, the highest being an unbeaten 128.

Vitori took the most ODI wickets for Zimbabwe in 2011-2012 — 13 wickets in 55,3 overs of the six matches Zimbabwe played, his best being five for 20.

Nominees for Bowler of the Year are Kyle Jarvis, Elton Chigumbura and Vitori.
