The tournament will coincide with the annual Fundraising Golf Day for Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund.

The flagship Golden Pilsener Harare Open will tee off on Thursday to next Saturday and will become the eighth tournament on the Zambezi Tour schedule. The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play and has a prize fund of a US$25 000 purse bankrolled by Delta Beverages through their Golden Pilsener brand.

While professionals will be slugging it out among themselves, amateurs will also have an opportunity to showcase their skills in a separate tournament which will be played in a four-ball stableford alliance format.

Tendayi Gwatiringa, the Zambezi Tour’s marketing and communications director, said a strong field of more than 60 professionals, comprising locals and a foreign players from South Africa and Zambia, are expected to grace the tournament.

Seasoned professional Ignatius Mketekete will go into the tournament as the defending Champion after winning the inaugural tourney last year, after piping Robson Saurombe by two shots.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Francis Tamburayi, one of the organisers of the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund fundraising Golf Day said they were delighted to have Delta Beverages on board.

“We are excited to have Delta Beverages, who have always stood by Zimbabwe’s sport, sponsoring most sporting disciplines from grassroots to the highest level, partnering with the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund through the Golden Pilsener brand. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund for onward distribution to over 80 charitable organisations or projects we work with.

“In addition to the round of golf, as part of the package, there is a halfway lunch and evening prize giving cocktail comprising an auction of various items to fund raise for the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund.”

The Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund was formerly known as the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, but after a review of the project and realisation that a helping hand should not only be extended during Christmas, it became the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund.
