The trials were conducted with scouts from Aston Villa, Leeds United, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Nottingham Town, Cambridge United, Stoke City and Liverpool present to watch budding talent.

The 11-year-old midfielder, who plays for Hokoyo Boys, a school team at  St John’s Preparatory School in Borrowdale, Harare, is scheduled to arrive in the country on Tuesday after a week long trial stint. Reports reaching Standardsport are that  the player impressed in training.

His coach Richard Solobala said he was now waiting to hear from some of the scouts who were present.

“The boy did extremely well. We are now waiting to hear offers from some of the scouts who were present,” Solobala said.

Other players, who were supposed to attend the same trials,  are Thompson Kandemiri from Dynamos reserves, Priviledge Chatora and Macalford Madovi from Seke, but failed to get visas on time.

Marufu’s parents Sladen and Angeline expressed delight at their son.

“It is amazing. He showed signs of a brilliant player while in Grade One and I made sure I bought  him a soccer ball and sent him to a nice football academy,” said Angeline.

“I want to salute his teachers from Grades 3-6 at St John’s who have worked hard with him and given him game time.”

Marufu attended Manchester United School of Soccer for one week, three months ago and trained at the famous Old Trafford. During his stint at United, he scooped two awards, one for being  the star player and the other  one for being the man-of-the-match.
