BULAWAYO — MDC-T Youth Assembly’s lobby for the conferment of the Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai with the freedom of the city status appears to have crumbled. REPORT BY SILAS NKALA
The city fathers have not yet deliberated on the matter since the request was made last year in August.
Bulawayo City Mayor, Patrick Thaba Moyo said the local authority had not seen the request by the party’s youth league.
“No one can lobby for that. Only the city council decides on who should be given such a status. It is the duty of the council to see how someone qualifies to be given that status.
“Those who say they are lobbying, please tell them they cannot lobby for such issues.”
MDC-T Bulawayo Youth Chairman, Bekithemba Nyathi said they had not sent the request to the mayor but to councillors.
“The issue might not have reached the Mayor officially, but we met the other councillors for consensus,” said Nyathi.
He said though the councillors have a prerogative of deciding who should be honoured, the people of Bulawayo had the right to propose names.
