Mufakose Queens missed out on closing the gap at the top when they drew with Cyclone Stars in a Marange National Women’s Soccer League match at Alexandra Sports Club yesterday.

In-form striker Rutendo Madongorere opened the scoring after 25 minutes in the first period, only for Talent Mbepo to equalise in the second half to salvage a point for the hosts.

The result saw Queens remaining second with 38 points, while Stars are fourth with 29 points from 17 matches with one league match still to be played. Mufakose came guns blazing in the first half, having the better of exchanges and made life difficult for Stars as they consistently troubled them with their movement.

It was after 25 minutes that they got the goal their efforts deserved when Faith Chasi’s corner kick eluded the Stars defence, only for a lurking Madongorere to blast home from close range for her fourth goal in two matches.

The goal seemed to send Stars into panic mode and whatever coach Yohane Chikaola said during the breather seemed to have achieved its desired effect as the hosts came out strong after the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, Stars restored parity when Felistas Muzongondi’s free kick found Mbepo, who tapped home past Onai Chingawo in goals for Queens.
