The vehicle continues an 80-year partnership between Mercedes-Benz on the Popes.

The customized M-Class SUV was built at the Alabama plant in Vance.  It was delivered to the Vatican last week.

The leader of the Catholic Church will use the Mercedes-Benz Popemobile during appearances throughout the world.

“It is an honor for Mercedes-Benz to be accompanying His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on his future journeys with our new Popemobile,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The new Popemobile will allow the Pope to get close to the public without foregoing the highest levels of safety and comfort.

In the latest edition, the dome has been extended to give the Pope more space and includes larger panels of glass.  While there is extra head room for the Pope, the overall height of the vehicle is shorter than the previous Popemobile.

Pope Pius XI was the first Pope to use a Mercedes-Benz vehicle in 1930.
