MUTARE — In a bizarre case, a Chipinge woman appeared in court after allegedly killing her new-born baby by smashing its head on the floor, before cutting its throat with a razor blade.
REPORT BY CLAYTON MASEKESA Naome Maurukira (19) of Wedge Hill Farm under Chief Mutema, appeared before the Mutare Magistrate Charles Murowe, facing a murder charge and was remanded in custody to a later date.
She was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
In a state case led by prosecutor Nelson Makunyire, Maurukira gave birth to a bouncing baby boy on December 20.
She woke up and went straight to a Blair toilet, where she smashed the baby’s head on the floor, cut his throat with a razor blade before throwing it into the toilet.
Maurukira’s sister, Petronella Jonga (16), saw a pool of blood on the entrance of the toilet and discovered that the child had been thrown into the toilet.
The baby’s lifeless body was covered with blood.
Jonga raised the issue with her mother, Madelyn Kamuchenje (46), who reported the matter to the police, leading to Maurukira’s arrest.
