The race, which has become an annual event on the local athletics calendar, will see participants drawn from men and women open categories, senior, veterans (men and women) competing in four distances — the 5km, 10km, 21km and the marathon.

Race director Marc Pozzo said: “I cannot tell which athletes have registered so far, but we are expecting a big number.

But I guess Gilbert Mutandiro will be part of the athletes.”

Registration for the race was opened on Friday while yesterday was the deadline for registration.

The winner of the marathon race in both the male and female categories will walk away US$750 richer with the second and third placed athletes getting US$500 and US$250 respectively.

Most of the participants in this event are set to use it as preparations for the Two Oceans and the Comrades marathon to be held in South Africa.

Ziscosteel athlete Ngonidzashe Ncube won last year’s edition in time of 2hrs 38mins 7sec piping Mutandiro with less than a second as the two went for a photo-finish.

Meanwhile, other athletes would be focusing on the provincial cross country to be hosted by the Harare Athletics Board at Prince Edward school this morning.
