Police suspect that Stacey could have been raped before being murdered by unknown assailants.

Scores of people gathered at Rugare Shopping Centre for the public memorial, as part of women’s groups’ commemoration of International Women’s Day celebrated across the world on March 8.

“Our daughters are being abused at home, at the shops, at commuter ranks and everywhere such that we no longer feel safe sending them from one room to another,” said Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development minister, Olivia Muchena, through a representative, Tecla Madziwa.

“We no longer feel at ease when our daughters leave a room to use the toilet because of the animal behaviour of some people who are in our midst.”

Several other speakers poured their hearts out calling for justice for abused women and girls. Children were advised to avoid walking alone.

“When I last spoke to my daughter over the phone, I promised her that I would see her in August, not knowing that was the last time I would talk to her,” Stacey’s mother, Muchaneta Musa said.
