The championships, which will involve most of the countries in the southern African region, is expected to run from April 26 to May 2 in Harare.

BUZ administrator Simon Lawson confirmed the appointment of the duo adding that Mugunyana will be assisted by Innocent Sithole while Pretty Tinarwo will deputise Vareta.

“The four –Mugunyana, Vareta, Tinarwo and Sithole have agreed to take up their respective coaching positions and we have confidence in them. Selection process is already underway and we expect to come up with the best players in the country,” he said.

“Trials will be held on March 23 in different parts of the country with the final team expected to go into camp after the Easter holiday. The coaches will do the selection in their respective provinces,” he said.

“Tinarwo who is based in Bulawayo will select players from the southern region with Vareta working with other coaches in the northern region to come up with the best team.

“This is the same case with the boys’ team where Sithole will be looking for the best players in the Manicaland province. This is the best way we can come up with the best for each team for the camp that will be done in Harare after Easter. The final 12 players for each team will then be named after the camping period,” he said.

Lawson said plans for the tournament are at an advanced stage with regional giants Mozambique having already confirmed their participation in the regional showcase whose winners will represent the region at the Under 16 Africa Basketball Championships to be held later this year.

“We expect a number of countries such as Angola, Zambia and South Africa to come but so far only Mozambique has confirmed its participation in the tournament,” he said.
