The position, which fell vacant following the expulsion of Solomon Mugavazi, who was implicated in match-fixing, is among a number of posts to be contested at the elections to be held on the weekend of April 20 and 21.

Nominations for these positions opened on March 22 and will close on April 4. Ali confirmed his interest in the Northern Region Division One chairmanship position.

“It is a suggestion that came from some sections of football lovers so that we do not continue to be left on the sidelines. You know I am heavily involved in football issues at my work place, but the position that I now hold at my company is a bit taxing. I need clearance from my bosses and by Tuesday, I will have the final answer,” said Ali.

Other positions up for grabs are that of the National Board Member (Development) which fell vacant after the banishment of Methembe Ndlovu who was implicated in the Asiagate scandal.

Also to be filled are the positions of Premier Soccer League Board Member (Development), Board Member (Finance) and the office chairman position.

The Board Member (Development) position was previously held by Cuthbert Chitima whose team Gunners FC was relegated, while that of Board Member (Finance) was held by former Dynamos treasurer Harrison Mbewe, who is no longer with the club.

Former Highlanders chairman Themba Ndlela, who was the league’s vice-chairman, resigned from his position.

The position of second vice-president which was held by Kenny Marange will not be contested as he is contesting his dismissal.

This is also the same case with the Southern and Central regions whose chairmen Gift Banda and Patrick Hokonya have also appealed against the decision to ban them from the game after being implicated in match-fixing.

Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze said the association’s electoral committee met on Wednesday and upheld the decision to close the nominations on April 4.

“Nominations for the vacant positions are already open and we expect all the papers to be in Harare from the provinces on April 5. The following day the nomination court will meet and the final list of all the contestants will be published,” he said.

Mashingaidze, however said election for the position of Zifa Board Member (Development) would be held at the association’s annual general meeting which has been moved from April 27 to May 4.

“We have had to move the annual general meeting to May 4 to avoid counter attraction with the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair where some of our members will be participating,” he said.

The Independent Electoral Committee which will run the elections comprises chairman Teererai Gunje, Timoth Sangarwe, Kenny Chigova, Cornelius Bwanya, Paphius Masunda and Ralph Maganga, with Mashingaidze coming in as the secretary.
