A proud Zimbabwean company, Kefalos Dairy products have been producing a wide range of top quality dairy products for over two decades, and has become a well-loved household name for its popular ice- creams, yoghurts and cheeses.

Its loyal Zimbabwean customer base are delighted to be able to buy locally made, world class dairy products throughout the country and Kefalos dairy products are often celebrated by visitors to our country, who declare that they are far superior to those they can buy at home!

It therefore comes as no surprise to hear that Kefalos won First Prize in the Plain Full Cream Yoghurt Category with their superb Greek Style Yoghurt, First Prize for Dairy Ice-Cream with Condiments with their Premium Hazelnut Ice-Cream, and Third Prize for their Mozzarella Cheese, so widely used by our local pizza outlets and restaurants nationwide. In the Pizza Mozzarella Cheese category, entries were judged both for their taste and their functionality.

For these great products, widely eaten and enjoyed by so many Zimbabweans, Kefalos is indeed a very worthy recipient of these accolades, and it is good to see such excellent quality achieving the recognition it deserves, beyond our borders, and while competing with many top South African brands.

Kefalos, Mozzarella is the pizza cheese of choice in Zimbabwe’s thriving pizza trade. This universally popular meal, whether taken “fast” as a take-away, or savoured at leisure in one of the many restaurants who serve up pizzas as part of their fare, demands top quality inputs.

Mozzarella must melt, yet at the same time retain its integrity to achieve the well-known elastic consistency when heated, and the Kefalos Mozzarella was found to achieve this in the Championship judging, as well as presenting an excellent flavour.

What few pizza lovers realise is that Kefalos Mozzarella is also delicious when eaten uncooked as part of a simple Italian — style salad of mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, basil and olive oil, or on the cheese board, or just on its own!

Its delicate and subtle flavour and slightly chewy, smooth and appealing consistency is one of my firm favourites — try it!

Kefalos launched its sophisticated Premium Ice-Cream Range last year to wide acclaim, and it has really taken off, so it is very pleasing to see one of its stable of three winning an award so soon. As well as the award-winning Hazelnut flavour, the premium range offers Vanilla Bean and Belgian Chocolate.

Kefalos began as a small company making Greek style Kefalotiri in Chinhoyi by a Mr Millianos. It was bought by Wolle Kirk who moved the operation to its present site and expanded the product mix into a wider range of the traditional European, Mediterranean and Scandinavian cheeses, such as Cheddar, Gouda, Mozzarella, as well as retaining the original recipe for the Kefalotiri. A yoghurt production line quickly followed, producing the award winning product in several flavours, including the vastly popular Kefalos Greek Style Yoghurt, the proud winner of this most recent award. Greek Yoghurt is especially thick and creamy, and full of flavour, and is enjoyed both on its own, or with cereal for breakfast, or as an ingredient in many recipes.

Yoghurt is great for marinading meat, as it is an excellent tenderiser, and is widely used in Indian cuisine. Kefalos Yoghurt is highly beneficial to health, being made with live AB cultures, the good bacteria that maintain a healthy balance of flora in the stomach.

Yoghurt also contains many important vitamins and minerals, most notably, of course, calcium.

Later, Kefalos branched out into ice-cream, and today its popular range of flavours, as well as the premium range, enjoy a great following and are widely served in restaurants nationwide, as well as in the home.
