Simon Sithole of Rupangwana village under Chief Tshovani pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals when he appeared before magistrate, Langton Ndokera last week.

He was sentenced to six months, three of which were set aside on condition he paid the owner of the donkey, Samuel Chudu, at least US$100.

Sithole told the court that he was prepared to compensate Chudu but also demanded compensation for the loss of his crop.

For the State, Prosper Chipangura said on March 20 this year, Sithole drove three stray donkeys belonging to Chudu from his field to the complainant’s house.

Upon arrival at the homestead, Sithole asked if the donkeys indeed belonged to Chudu.

When it was confirmed that they belonged to Chudu, Sithole drove the animals into the kraal.

He jumped into the kraal and struck two donkeys with the axe.

One donkey died on the spot, while the other escaped with some injuries.

Chudu made a police report leading to Sithole’s arrest.
