English County cricket club Yorkshire’s strength and conditioning coach Tom Summers is expected in the country on Friday for a five-day fitness training session with the Zimbabwe cricket team.

Summers is coming at the recommendation of newly-appointed coach Andy Waller, who has expressed great concern over his charges’ low fitness levels.

The Zimbabwe team comprising 25 players is currently in camp preparing for the five-match ODI home series against India set for next month. Waller confirmed that Summers is scheduled to arrive in the country on Friday and immediately begin work.

He said before his departure, the fitness guru would leave each player with a programme to work on with local coaches. “Everything on Tom’s arrival is now in place and we expect him on Friday. He will be working with individual players,” said Waller.

Last month, the former right-hand batsman told Standardsport that improving the players’ fitness levels would be his immediate task.

“I was impressed by the Bangladesh outing. But I was not impressed by our tour of the West Indies which I watched from England. The players’ condition was not up to standard,” Waller said.

“That is not something you expect from professional cricketers. Therefore we need to work harder in improving our fitness levels before we play India. We have to shed a lot of sweat, blood and tears,” he said.

After Summers’ intense fitness regime, focus will then be shifted to the technical aspect of the game.
