MARONDERA — Police in Mashonaland East province have availed a police farm to the government that will soon be sub-divided into several residential stands for civil servants to ease accommodation crisis in the farming town.
REPORT BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA
Of the 600 hectares of land availed to government, members of the police were allocated 300 hectares, 100 hectares for churches and 200 hectares for other civil servants.
Speaking at the handover ceremony recently, Mashonaland East governor and resident minister, Aeneas Chigwedere described the move by the police as a great move that would help address the housing problems in the town.
“I am elated today and allow me to say this is one of the major developments that have been done by the police anywhere in Zimbabwe”.
“I hope the move will do a lot in addressing the housing problem among civil servants in Marondera.”
However, he urged provincial leaders to exercise transparency when allocating the residential stands to the civil servants.
“There should be transparency when allocating the residential stands,” he said.

A number of police officers in Marondera have over the years been facing a serious accommodation crisis, resulting in some of them residing in farms around the town.
Just like many other towns and cities in the country, Marondera which has a population of over 62 000 people, has a huge housing backlog.
MUDEREDZWA ELATED
Outgoing Officer Commanding Police in Mashonaland East, Assistant Commissioner Ronald Muderedzwa, who won the Buhera Central under a Zanu PF ticket in the just-ended harmonised elections, said he was happy that scores of police officers would be given housing stands.
