Sports Reporter Michael Madyira won the first prize, while desk editor Brian Nkiwane was runner up. Madyira pocketed US$1 500 cash, a floating trophy and a Delta Beverages hamper.

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) group sports editor Simba Rushwaya said the fact that The Standard produced the only two nominees for the award speaks volumes about the quality of sports journalism within the stable.

“This underlines the fact that we are the leading media house when it comes to sports reporting. We will strive to improve our standards and continue to give our readers value for money,” he said.

Two other AMH journalists were also honoured. NewsDay acting business editor, Bernard Mpofu was runner up in two categories, Business and Financial Journalist of the Year. NewsDay Parliamentary reporter, Veneranda Langa was runner up in the Parliamentary and Legal Journalist of the Year category.
