Juwawo has been doubtful of the race but confirmed on Friday that he had made up his mind to participate in the second edition of the race. The battle-hardened Shabanie Mine-based long distance runner beat a host of other renowned athletes last year to win the race in a time of 1,02,70, with eight minutes ahead of the chasing pack.

Juwawo pocketed US$3 000 for coming first. Calvin Pangiso, who finished second in 1,10,38 took home US$1 500 while third placed Edmore Sibanda who crossed the line in 1,10,56 pocketed US$1 000.

Nyahora edged Netherlands-based Sharon Tavengwa to win the women’s race in 1,11,33. She pocketed US$3 000 in the process.

Tavengwa finished second with Faith Nyasango coming third. Other top athletes that have confirmed participation in this year’s edition include Jonathan Chinyoka and veteran Colleen Makaza, as well as Olivia Chitate in the ladies category. The sponsors of the event upped the stakes for this year’s edition to more than US$100 000 with total prices to be dished out set to be over US$25 000.

Speaking to Standardsport on Friday, Old Mutual spokesperson Grace Mukahanana, said preparations were going on well as athletes were registering at different designated areas.

“All I can confirm is that the registration exercise has been going on well. But I can tell you that both winners from last year will be available to defend their titles.”
