ZIMBABWE women soccer team lifted the 2013 Unity Cup trophy after crushing neighbours Lesotho at Rufaro Stadium yesterday.

Bustling forward Rutendo Makore led the rout with a first half hat-trick on an afternoon the Mighty Warriors went on a goal scoring spree.

Leading by the three goals to nil at the break, Rosemary Mugadza’s ladies were to add five more in the second half through a brace by livewire captain Felistas Muzongondi and a goal apiece from outstanding Merjury Nyaumwe, Nokuthula Ndlovu and substitute Violet Bepete.

The score line could have been worse for Lesotho if it was not for the heroics of Lesotho goalkeeper Lineo Nowo, as well as a flurry of fluffed opportunities from the hosts’ strikers.

Mighty Warriors coach Mugadza hailed the team’s performance but refused to be flattered by the goal margin in a match which was part of the national team’s preparation for the 2014 African Women Championship qualifiers.

“We did very well today, it is always good to start on a winning note as we prepare for Botswana but we really have a lot of work to do as you could see that our fitness levels were questionable.

“This match was an opportunity to measure ourselves and we did just that but honestly, I didn’t expect an eight nil score-line,” she said.
