The defending champions and favourites shrugged off a spirited challenge from Royal Harare B team, amassing 603 points in two rounds compared to Royal’s 606 in an event held under difficult wet conditions.

Top amateur golfer Clive Nguru was the top performer for Chapman, carding 71 and 78 in respective rounds to finish with a gross total of 149 although he was 4th on the overall individual standings.

Thembalani Vundhla, Stuart Krog and Steven Simukayi, who completed the Chapman A team, had a good time on the Wingate course making valuable contributions to the victory.

Royal Harare’s Gary Thompson was the overall best performer, grossing 146 in the allotted rounds to ensure his team made a remarkable shout for the title.

Former top Zimbabwe cricket spinner, Graeme Cremer, Kieren Vincent and Gerald Shwabane were also in the Royal Harare B team that settled for a runners up finish.

Wingate’s Shepherd Chiwaya put up an impressive solo effort to finish tied on 146 points with Thompson at the top in the individual standings while Zimbabwe amateur team captain Christian Mbanga representing Chapman B finished third with 149 points.

Close to 100 local amateur golfers entered the annual Julius Robinson Trophy, which marked the beginning of the 2014 amateur golf season after the traditional season opening event, the Dugmore Trophy, was postponed.

Zimbabwe Golf Association publicity officer Tavenganiswa Mabikacheche was impressed by the turnout at the tournament.

“The Julius Robinson Trophy was well-attended and in terms of numbers, the turnout was bigger than last year, a sign that more and more golf players want to garner points in our Order of Merit.

“With more publicity of our tournaments, I think even more people will come as the season progresses,” he said.

He said at least 20 major amateur tournaments were on the golfing calendar this year.
