The 24-year-old vendor sustained a wound and lacerations at the back of his head and could hardly walk after having been severely beaten around the knees with a metal rod.
They forced Dhori into a Toyota Ipsum vehicle and took him to a secluded place near Harare Show Grounds.
“They took turns to punch me in the face and bashed my head with a steel rod. They also used the same weapon to beat me around the knees while accusing me of giving false information to the NewsDay about police who are corrupt,” he said, showing wounds at the back of his head.
After the assault, he said, the police details, realising he was injured, took him to Harare Central Police Station where they charged him with obstruction of justice. He said they forced him to pay a US$20 fine for “obstruction of justice” and then released him.
Efforts to get a comment from police spokesperson Charity Charamba were fruitless last night.
