Songore is confident he will go all the way to the finals of the prestigious juniors’ event for which he qualified together with 13 other athletes both from the female and male categories.

Others who qualified for the prestigious event that will run from July 22 to 27 are Clide Rusinga (400m hurdles), Tendai Zimuto (5 000m) and a 4x100m relay team that consists of Songore, Tatenda Musarurwa, Kudakwashe Nyahuma and Shaun Banda.

In the female category, Nyasha Mutsetse, Maryjoy Mudyiravanji (1 500m), Enlita Ncube (1 500m) and the 4 x 100m team of Tsitsi Mahachi, Ruvarashe Muzinde, Mazvita Mutisi and Chido Dzinotyiwei hope to bring medals for the country.

Speaking to Standardsport on Friday, the Upper Six student at Peterhouse High School in Marondera, said he was hoping to reach the finals in his favorite race — the 200m category.

“The preparations for the World Championships are going on well. Currently I am doing my preparations at school. What I am doing is fine-tuning my performance before we meet in Harare next month for our camping,” he said.

He added: “My major aim is to at least reach the finals in the 200m category. That is my first goal and I am confident that I am going to do it. I am also going to represent the country in the relay team. We have a good squad in this category,” he added.

Their head coach Silas Muringani told this publication last week that he was confident that the youngsters are going to raise the country’s flag high this time around.
