The Mauritius-based athlete had qualified for the finals on Wednesday night after recording a personal best time of 20,38sec in the semi-finals, having come second in the race’s heats.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) president Tendai Tagara confirmed the development yesterday.

“It’s very unfortunate Zimwara did not make it into the finals after suffering a hamstring injury just before the race yesterday [Friday] during warm up for the final race. I am disappointed by the development because he lost the chance of competing with Africa’s best,” he said.

Tagara said the nation had high hopes of Zimwara grabbing medals.

“He was our hope of bringing at least a medal from the championships. He was very consistent throughout the tournament, improving on his times that saw him achieving a personal best time. We were expecting him to be in the top three considering his performance from the first round,” he said.

Zimwara is one of the only two athletes who are representing thecountry at the competition.

The other athlete is South-Africa based Rodwell Ndlovu, who crashed out in the semifinals of a 200m race.
