Tinashe Chikoko (26) and Samson Mujakwe (29) told The Standard that although they started off with Mathematics, their intention was to cover all subjects.

Chikoko said needy pupils would have the opportunity to watch the DVDs over and over again until they mastered the concept that would have been covered in each lesson. He said schools could also play the DVDs to their students and incorporate them in the teaching of Mathematics.

“We realised that there is a high failure rate in Mathematics because students fail to capture the concepts quickly,” he said. Mujakwe said they had approached the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education with their proposal to work with schools and they were still awaiting a response.

He added that going forward, they would incorporate experts in all subjects and produce more DVDs to assist students. He however stressed that it would be foolhardy for pupils to solely rely on the DVDs as they were just meant to complement the teachers’ efforts.

“We have also incorporated the use of Shona in the teaching of Mathematics after observing that the trend in other countries such as Cuba was that they use their indigenous languages in teaching,” Mujakwe said.

He said so far they had produced 60 copies of the DVD and were appealing to sponsors forfunding.

Out of the 10 318 pupils who sat for the O’Level June non-calculator Mathematics examination, only 2 181 recorded Grade C or better passes while of the 49 889 pupils who sat for the calculator Mathematics, 14 897 passed. This translated to 21,14% and 29,86% pass rates respectively.
