Mutare-based Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) reporter Obey Manayiti on Friday scooped two prizes at the inaugural Media Mining Awards held in Harare.

Manayiti was judged overall winner in the Mining Reporter of the Year and also first prize winner for the print category.

Five categories were up for grabs namely: electronic media, digital platform, corporate social responsibility and environment, artisanal and small scale and print awards. For winning the overall Mining Reporter of the Year award, Manayiti walked away with US$1 000 cash prize and a trophy sponsored by the Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines. He also won two nights’ accommodation for two people at Victoria Falls hotel.

For the print category, Manayiti won a cash prize of US$500 and a trophy sponsored by Cell Insurance.

Deputy minister of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services Supa Mandiwanzira who officiated at the event urged journalists to broaden their knowledge on mining issues.

Manayiti paid tribute to the team work at AMH, the publishers of two dailies NewsDay and Southern Eye and two weeklies; The Standard and Zimbabwe Independent.
