Chinhoyi Diocese Catholic priests Father Ignatius Kariati and Father Alfred Matonhodze were killed in an accident on Friday night at Mupfure River Bridge in Mt Darwin, Mashonaland Central.

The two were travelling from Bindura to Mt Darwin Christ Mambo Parish where they were based. Father Aleni James yesterday confirmed the death of the priests.
‘‘Yes, I can confirm the death of our two priests who died in Mt Darwin last night. The death has shocked the whole Diocese especially as the priests were still green in the field. Anyway, God has done His will and there is nothing we can do,” said Fr James.
Although details of the cause of the accident are still sketchy, Fr James said information at hand was that the priests’ vehicle hit the rails of the bridge and plunged into the river.
Fr James said Fr Kariati was ordained into priesthood in September 2013 while Fr Matonhodze was ordained last year in August.
Fr James said a first vigil mass was held in Mt Darwin yesterday while a second mass would be held in Chinhoyi today before a final Requim Mass at Kutama where the priests would be buried on Tuesday.
