The competition, which has always been a major highlight on the domestic athletics calendar took a sabbatical in 2004, only to return in 2012.

An array of the country’s top athletes that include defending champion in the male category, Elijah Mabhunu, Cuthbert Nyasango, Wirimayi Juwawo, Lyno Muchena and Millen Matende are set to rock Mutare this morning.

In the ladies category, defending champion Constance Nyasango is set to face stiff competition from Olivia Chitate.

Mabhunu revealed that he was disappointed by his employers, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, who ordered him to participate in the 10km race instead of his preferred 21km race.

He is set to represent the country at the ninth edition of the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation Games to be hosted by Swaziland from July 22 to August 2.

However, Mabhunu, who is also eyeing a maiden Olympic qualification next year, said he was confident of winning the 10km race.

“I am disappointed because all police officers were ordered not to perform in the tough 21km race because we are also preparing to compete at the Sarpcco games slated for this month in Swaziland,” he said.

He added, “I was hoping to defend my title in the major category, but anyway I am confident I will win the 10km race although I am expecting tough competition.”

The winner in both the 21km female and male categories will walk away with $550. An additional $100 is on offer for athletes who are going to beat last year’s time in both female and male categories. Athletes are also set to participate in the 10km, 5km, 21km wheelchair and veterans categories.
