Six people died while several others were seriously injured in three separate accidents on Friday night.

Two of the accidents that claimed five lives occurred along the Harare-Mutare highway while the other one happened at Jerera Growth Point in Zaka, Masvingo killing a traditional leader.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accidents last night. The name of the chief who died in the Zaka mishap could not be established at the time of going to press. Snr Ass Com Charamba said: “We are yet to establish the name of the chief, but he died on the spot. It was a fatal accident.”

Snr Ass Com Charamba said three people died at the 104 km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway near Macheke when one Artwell Gunha who was driving a vehicle with a South African registration number was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle while attempting to overtake four vehicles at a blind spot.

About eight people were seriously injured after the vehicles piled up and they were taken to Marondera hospital. Another two people died when the driver of a vehicle they were travelling in lost control after a tyre burst, also along the Harare-Mutare road. The vehicle overturned.

Snr Ass Com Charamba yesterday urged people to exercise caution and avoid speeding to save lives. She said: “It’s better to be late. Drivers are urged to avoid speeding, respect road regulations and exercise caution to avoid unnecessary loss of life.”
