Gumbo and other former Zanu PF members linked to the project told The Standard that the outfit was putting final touches to its constitution and other relevant documents, such as their party’s economic and social blueprints ahead of the launch, to be announced “soon”.

Gumbo confirmed that ground work had been done, but refused to give dates for the launch.

“When the time comes, we will tell you, but at the present moment we are working on logistics and documentation which will guide our people,”said Gumbo.

“We have our own timelines on how we are going about the launch. There is no need for people to panic. We are not rushing and we are just doing as planned.”

However, some sources within the People First project maintained that the party would be launched before year-end.

They said party structures were already in place.

Mujuru, who deputised President Robert Mugabe for 10 years, was booted out of Zanu PF and government along with Gumbo, former secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa among over 140 Zanu PF senior members on allegations of plotting against Mugabe.

They have denied the charges and are now working on forming a party to challenge Mugabe in the 2018 general elections.

An official who chose to speak on condition of anonymity, but is involved in the organisation of the party said: “We are very close now. Co-ordinators are in place at provincial, zonal, constituency, ward and section level.”

He added: “Mobilisation is at an advanced stage and the launch is imminent. The constitution and a blueprint are being finalised.

“The people’s party is coming. It has taken a bit long to shape because we do not want to make the same mistakes that have been made by other parties. Our blueprints are realistic and we will be bound and committed to deliver on promises that we will make.

“We will be the game changer of Zimbabwe’s politics and that should be a lesson for Zanu PF in 2018,” said the official.
