Those who were not at Larfage in Mabvuku in Harare will wish they had been there.

This is not to mention the song and dance which characterised the end of the proceedings as Delta Beverages general manager Munyaradzi Nyandoro handed over the trophy to the GameCocks captain Danny Phiri.

It was a fitting tribute for a campaign that began in March and ended with that memorable 3-1 thrashing of Harare City that secured the biggest prize in Zimbabwean football.

The win yesterday counts for nothing as the GameCocks had already cut short Dynamos’ dominance of Zimbabwean football.

Goals from Clemence Matawu and Lawrence Mhlanga secured the victory, but in the end the game was academic as Joey Antipas’ men, if not boys, had – unlike Dynamos in the past four years – secured their trophy with a game in hand. Antipas said he was thrilled by his latest achievement, but refuses to take the glory.

“I am chaffed to be taking the trophy away from Harare to Bulawayo, but credit goes to the boys for all their effort throughout the season,” said Antipas, a hard-tackling defender during his days with Arcadia United.

The other team outside Highlanders who have won the championship for the city of Bulawayo was the Ephraim Chawanda-led Zimbabwe Saints, who won the championship way back in 1988.

In the meantime, it is celebration time for the GameCocks.
