The association recently announced the junior men and women’s Under-21 teams for the event which serves as a qualifier for Junior Hockey World Cup.

Both teams have already stepped up preparation for the continental competitions slated for March 18 -28 in Windhoek and are set to have their third fortnightly training camp at Arundel Hockey Ground.

“We do not have enough resources and everyone including Hockey Association of Zimbabwe, players and parents have come together to mobilise resources. We have set up a fundraising committee to do the job while we have approached several potential partners to assist,” HAZ president Humphrey Chigwedere said.

“We are looking to raise a minimum of $66 000 for the trip but we also have a number of travelling options. If we go by plane which is our preferred option we need $33 000 per team to make the trip which will amount to $66 000. We could opt to drive to Windhoek which could be taxing for our teams but less expensive,” he added.

Chigwere made a plea to the corporate community to bail out his association and possibly help bring the World Cup dream for the junior teams into reality.

The top two teams in both categories at the Africa Championships will proceed to represent the continent in India and Chile later this year.

Chilean city, Santiago will host the women Junior World Cup from November 23 to December 4 while the men’s edition will be held in Delhi, India, from November 1 to11.

Nine men’s and eight women’s teams will grace the quadrennial event to be staged at the Windhoek Hockey Stadium.

Defending champions South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Egypt and Namibia will feature in the men’s competition while only Egypt will not be represented in the women’s competition.
