THE stage is set for the first women parliamentarians’ golf tournament, to be hosted by Chapman Golf Club. The event is being bankrolled by Cemapak Investments.

Although there have been football matches which have involved male parliamentarians, this is the first time that female parliamentarians will take to the course and in an elite sport such as golf, for that matter.
Already, the likes of former deputy prime minister Thokozani Khupe of the MDC-T, Zanu PF’s Flora Bhuka and Jessie Majome, also of the MDC-T, have been to the golf course to fine-tune their performance ahead of the tournament – set to be held early next month.
In fact, this is the first time in history that women representatives from opposing parties will be on the course to show off their skills in one of the most expensive sporting disciplines.
According to Cemapak Investments events director Blessing Piki, they are trying to lure female business executives as they have not been actively involved in golf, as is the case with their male counterparts.
“We have realised that more and more business executives have time for sport and more importantly for golf. But this is not happening with the ladies. So we are hoping that they also get involved with their Parliament colleagues and share one or two things,” said Piki
Piki said with more and more women getting into Parliament and some of them taking very important business roles, golf was the ideal sport for them.

Piki said although women were actively involved in other forms of sports like football, netball and volleyball, few had ever heard of the sport of golf, hence Cemapak’s decision to try to popularise the sport.
