Sungura icon Alick Macheso hit the jackpot on Thursday night when local businessman George Chimhini bought a CD of his latest offering Tsoka Dzerwendo for $5 000.

Chimhini, who has interests in a number of businesses in Harare, shrugged off the challenge from several bidders to get the CD of the six-track project at the album launch at Harare International Conference Centre.
Macheso, who is riding high with his one-week-old album also received a residential stand in Harare from businessman Phillip Chiyangwa. Sulumani Chimbetu presented the stand to Macheso on Chiyangwa’s behalf.
The heir to the Dendera throne also gave Macheso a holiday voucher for two nights at a Nyanga hotel. Macheso’s long-awaited album which was released last Monday sold close to 150 000 copies in the first five days of its release, a feat no local artist has reached in the wake of the piracy scourge.
Meanwhile, Macheso proved that he was the doyen of Zimbabwean music with a five-star performance at the album launch ceremony.
Playing for the first time “full versions” of songs from the new album, the Orchestra Mberikwazvo frontman showed that he was second to none when it comes to live performances.

Although he failed to fill the giant venue, his performance before hundreds of fans who braved the rains on Thursday night was out of this world.
Even supporting acts who included Brian K, Soul Jah Love, Killer T, Trevor Dongo as well as Extra Large did not disappoint at the event which was organised by Macheso’s partners — Jive Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and Nash Paints.
The Madhawu-hitmaker, who was clad in a navy blue designer suit, introduced himself to the crowd with the song, Baba off his latest album. He gave a vintage performance, much to the delight of a myriad of fans before he left the stage only to return an hour and half later.
He played all six tracks from the latest album before he took fans down memory lane with songs such as Madhawu, Charakupa and Mundikumbuke, among others.
Local sungura artists who included Sulumani, Tedious Matsito, Peter Moyo, Tendai and Morgan Dembo as well as ex-Orchestra Mberikwazvo guitarist Innocent Mijintu were in attendence in a gesture of solidarity with their colleague.
National police spokesperson Charity Charamba and her husband, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director Elvas Mari and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke were notable guests at the event.
