South African stand-up comedian John Vlismas is set to perform at Reps Theatre, Harare at the end of the month.

By Moses Mugugunyeki The 43-year-old comedian, who won the 2007 South African Comedy Award for best stand-up comedian of the year and was a finalist in the 2008 Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off has proved to be one of the most creative, prolific and well-known comics on the global front.

Show organisers, Xtratime Entertainment confirmed Vlismas’ visit to Zimbabwe for the show scheduled for May 28.

“Following successful shows in Harare where we have hosted international comics like Goliaths and Goliaths, Anne Kansiime, and just recently Barry Hilton and most of our local comics, Xtratime Entertainment is happy to bring [John] Vlismas for the Harare audiences in the new show titled Laugh Out Loud Ha-ha-harare,” said Xtratime Entertainment spokesperson Tonderai Mwaita.

Vlismas is well-known for his outspoken and observational humour. His ability to understand and comment on political, social and economic affairs has earned him a broad fan base and growing corporate client base, as well as invitations to perform in England, Germany, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Botswana and Namibia and Zimbabwe.

He has written professionally for print, television, stage and radio and has appeared in and co-produced several South African films. He has worked as a television and radio presenter.

Vlismas was born in Marondera before he moved to South Africa. He has performed in Harare before and left audiences clamouring for more.

“Vlismas is the rock star of comedy, you can miss his show at your own peril,” said Mwaita.

He said tickets for the show could be bought at The Spotlight Reps Theatre foyer in Belgravia. Tickets cost $20.
