Doing everything that Christ says

Scripture says in John 2 v 1-5; On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”[NIV]

Though she was addressing the servants at the wedding, that line is profound in so far as it addresses all Christians to do everything He tells us to do. It was his mother who introduced him to the world through that instruction, to “do everything he tells you”. His mother knew Jesus was a special child whose conception was like no other. She had had an angelic visitation before conception and she knew that while she was the chosen one of God to bring on the Messiah upon this earth, the child was God’s. Luke 1 v 26-33 reads: In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”  Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.  But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Mary knew that the child was special and whoever would follow what the Christ said would never run short of anything. Christ was on earth for a short while, but to be able to do all that he told and taught would be to live a true Christian life. If we claim to be his followers then we must be able to act upon his word.

But what did Jesus tell us to do?

He teaches us to be born again as he converses with Nicodemus in the dead of the night (John 3).

He tells us to worship in truth and spirit as he addresses the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well in Samaria (John 4).

He teaches us not to despise but love when he dines at Zacchaeus’ house. In Luke 10v 1-10 the word reads;   . . . .All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”  Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” [NIV]

He demonstrates compassion when he spares the life of a woman who had been caught fornicating (John 8) This space cannot exhaust all that Christ tells us to do, it is all recorded in the scriptures; find time to read the word. He exhorts us to love and pray for our enemies, to serve, to love and have heart for the poor and infirm and not to judge. He also gave us assurance for the after-life when he said he was leaving us the Holy Spirit to comfort us while he went ahead to prepare and would come back for us.

If we do as he said, we would not falter and no man/woman would mislead us in our walk of faith. His grace is sufficient.
