The Tendai Biti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will seriously look into establishing coalitions with like-minded political parties amid renewed calls for President Robert Mugabe to step down for failing to turn around the economy.

A number of PDP officials have been seen at Zimbabwe People First leader, Joice Mujuru’s rallies where they deliveed solidarity messages.
According to resolutions made at the PDP’s second general council meeting held in Gweru on Thursday, the opposition party said it would soon concretise the on-going discussions with other political formations as part of its election preparedness.
“The party shall also increase engagement with local and international stakeholders as well as carry out consultative programmes on the need for a national convergence platform that will give birth to the National Transitional Authority (NTA),” reads part of the resolutions.
“The party is committed to continue offering thought leadership on key national issues affecting ordinary Zimbabweans, seeing that the Zanu PF government is clueless and currently engulfed in succession battles on the back of an ageing Robert Mugabe.”
PDP urged Sadc and the African Union to revive and restate its mandate of “curatorship over Zimbabwe”, established at the Sadc extra-ordinary summit in Mozambique in 2007.
PDP said it embraces the recent emergence of social movements in Zimbabwe which provide opportunities to broaden mass activism and deepen the fight for democracy.

“We demand a stoppage of on-going harassment and incarceration of citizens who are expressing their discontent with ongoing economic misgovernment, corruption and deteriorating economic conditions in Zimbabwe,” the party said.
“The party is encouraged by the position taken by the gallant sons and daughters of the liberations struggle [war veterans] who are now taking a stand against tyranny and debauchery.”
