FROM THE PEWS WITH CONELIA MABASA

People are restless and anxious. Hopelessness is the order of the day. Citizens are angry that over the years, corrupt officials have not been held to account, nepotism has flourished and lately poverty levels have escalated. The hope that was brought about by multi-currency use is now threatened by the impending introduction of bond notes “for exporters”.

Some opposition parties have moved to capitalise on the current situation to win hearts, with Joice Mujuru of ZimPF suing President Robert Mugabe over SI 64 of 2016 that banned imports. She is also fighting to stop the introduction of bond notes, besides being very visible alongside citizens as they try to salvage what is left of the economy.

While most opposition parties seem to lack strategy on how to deal with the current situation, the youths have taken it upon themselves to confront government over corruption, unemployment, the missing $15 billion, irregular tenders at Zesa Holdings, VP Phelekezela Mphoko’s long stay in a hotel, among a host of other ills bedevilling our beautiful nation. Youths are organising themselves into groups that hold peaceful demos to demand answers and present petitions to relevant authorities.

The tension and everyday fights are not leading anywhere. When you know you are in a situation that you cannot do much about in terms of helping yourself; it could be poverty and a failing economy, a terminal illness or you being haunted by past mistakes, the only sure way to overcome is to look to God. I strongly believe that this nation needs God’s grace. God does not turn away from those that have unwavering faith in him and look to him for salvation.

Joel 2 v 18-22 reads: Then the Lord was jealous for his land and took pity on his people. The Lord replied them: “I am sending you grain, new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations.

“I will drive the northern horde far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land; its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea. And its stench will go up; its smell will rise.”

Surely, he has done great things! Do not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice. Surely the Lord has done great things! Do not be afraid, you wild animals, for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green. The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree and the vine yield their riches.

May the faithful fight on their knees to claim the restoration that God has promised. His grace is sufficient.
