Basement side Border Strikers stand on the brink of relegation and another defeat today could all but confirm the Beitbridge side’s demotion to the less fashionable lower league.

On the other hand, CAPS United currently second on the log standings, are in desperate need of maximum points to keep up the title chase, with just four matches remaining in the season.

“They [CAPS United] are a big team, a well-oiled Green Machine chasing the championship and we are a small team fighting relegation. We start as underdogs, but it doesn’t mean we are going to roll over. In fact, we are so motivated to be playing such a big team and we will give it our best,” Vahombe, as Masomere is commonly referred to, said.

With the odds staked heavily against Border Strikers’ chances of survival, Masomere believes they can still do the impossible.

This week, he even intensified the training schedule for the team and had the players train yesterday, on the eve of the big match, a day customarily set aside for rest.

Makepekepe, who have scarcely managed to keep the title dream despite a disrupting financial crunch, know they need divine intervention in their quest for glory.

“God is with us and we are marching to the Promised Land. We are performing well, beating a well-sponsored team with all resources. We are going through a process but we will get our rewards from God,” assistant coach Fungai “Tostao” Kwashi said.

“The mood in the camp is great. The whole team is working and fighting for each other. Border Strikers are a tricky side and now they have Masomere, who is a great coach. They will be working hard to survive relegation.”

Strikers will miss the services of star defender Godfrey Mukambi through suspension, while also suspended for CAPS is reliable defender Stephen Makatuka.
