There were some violent skirmishes from a section of Highlanders fans during and after the match as they threw missiles onto the pitch and at opposition supporters after the match.

Striker Roderick Mutuma again failed to elude controversy, getting involved in a verbal exchange with Chapungu players after he was restrained from confronting opponents by his teammates.

Highlanders coach Elroy Akbay was disappointed by his side’s poor showing at the hands of battling Chapungu. “We played very badly today and you do not win matches if you play like this.

“Our performance in the first half was very bad . . . We failed to retain possession on most occasions, allowing the opponent to play.

“The opponent did not play any better but we only have ourselves to blame,” said Akbay.

Chapungu coach Tendai Chikuni lauded his charges for a brave performance against the log leaders.

“We played against a very good team that has been doing very well and the fact that we managed to stand the ground against them gives me a lot of positives going forward.

“I am really impressed with the guys’ performance today [yesterday]. They recovered well from the defeat against CAPS United last week,” said Chikuni.

The hosts started the match on a bright note when Tinei Chitora brilliantly got his way behind the Bosso defence and chipped Ariel Sibanda, but his effort was well wide of goal.

Tshilamoya looked confident on the ball as the game progressed but clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between.

Mutuma got a chance after a brilliant solo display from the right, but his powerful effort was repelled by an alert Talbert Shumba in goal for Chapungu.

On the other hand, Xolani Ncube fired a free-kick for Chapungu just outside the box but his effort did not yield much.

Bosso started the second half stronger with Rahman Kutsanzira coming close with a powerful shot but it was inches wide of goal.

Four minutes before full-time, Chapungu attacked the visitors with pace led by Phillip Marufu, but they failed again to break the deadlock.
