Matende (19) was crowned Miss Gweru last year after shrugging off challenge from 11 other contestants at the event held at Cathedral Hall. Next Friday, she will be at the same venue, handing over the crown to the new queen who will be picked out of the 10 vying for the coveted Miss Gweru accolade.

Miss Gweru, a brainchild of Mavis Koslek of Image Modelling Agency, has become the foundation of local pageantry and Matende believes it was a launch pad for her modelling career.

“Winning the Miss Gweru title helped me gain confidence and I went on to compete at national level. I took part in the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2016 and I was among the top seven. I am proud to have represented Gweru at a national level,” Matende told The Standard Style last Wednesday.

“I am still pursuing my modelling career and my dream is to walk on the international ramp and bring the crown home. I believe in myself and I am grateful to my supportive citizens of Gweru.”

Matende, who won the Miss Gweru crown when she was a Form 6 student at Thornhill High School in Gweru, said she had the best of her life as the city’s ambassador.

“I had a wonderful year as Miss Gweru and city ambassador. I had the opportunity to grace events such as the grand opening of Golden Mile Hotel [in Kwekwe] and the official launch of the 98.4 FM radio station in Gweru, among many other events,” she said.

“With regards to charity, I visited Batanai Old People’s Home and Rosedale Children’s Home, showing love and care to the less-priviledged.”
